I suspect this is a user or setup error rather than a bug of any type...
We are really struggling with unique car numbers in the software.
All I care about is that within each class, no two cars have the same number. There can be 42 STU and 42 NSA, just not 42 STS and 42 STS.
I can't seem to get the software configured to do this? I have setup events with and without the "Unique Car Number" per class flag and it really doesn't seem to matter.
Additionally, for some reason, if I ever had an entry of 42 STU at a previous event, even if they aren't registered for the current event, the system will not let me re-use the 42 STU number.
Finally, and this may be a feature request - is there a way to have the system treat the rollup classes (PAX) as separate as far as numbers? Currently, I can't have 42 INDEX-STU and 42 INDEX-STS as the system sees that as the same class.
Thoughts on what I am doing wrong?
We are having some issues with this same problem as well. Actually very much the same as @DaveW .
We import all our registrations from MSR and then add drivers on site. When I go to add a new person on site, I check to see if that number is available for that day and if it's free, I try to register the new person with that number, but then I get the error saying I'm not allowed to do that. :(
Our workaround has been to go into the member's profile who has that permanent number and reassign them a new permanent number like x+200. Then the original number, x, is free to use. At the end of an event we have to undo this or be forced to redo it at the next event.
E.g. Car number 1 is permanently registered to someone, let's call him Bob. If Bob doesn't show up for an event, I want to issue car number 1 to someone else. I'm not allowed to, regardless of which class they are in (even if it's totally different from Bob). So I go into the member profiles and reassign Bob's number to 201 and save it, then I can register the new person as 1 and his codriver as 101. At the end of the event, the new guy is going to be saved with car #1, so if Bob shows up at the next event, I have to redo this process in the other direction. Not super easy or fun.
I guess our problem is what we call "permanent number" aren't really permanent. We use them to block off pre-registration so that Bob is guaranteed to get his car number as long as he pre-registers, but after that closes, we would want to release all unused numbers. I don't think there's an easy way to do this. So maybe this is just our problem. However it also creates problems for test and tunes and schools and other non-points events, as those don't necessarily have the same rules with regards to numbering.
It would be nice if, instead of the error message, there was an option to overwrite the other guy, or something like that.
Also, to @DaveW's point, if 42STU was at a previous event and does not have a permanent number, it should be released. Also to @DaveW's point, the unique number per class flag doesn't appear to matter.
Lastly, I would second the feature request that @DaveW mentioned with separate numbers per Pax Class instead of per Class. That isn't strictly necessary for us, as we can manually handle that, but it would be nice. :)
